Low-lying areas of Noakhali coast remain flooded for the second day, people in distress
Due to the new moon and low pressure, the low-lying areas of the coastal area of Noakhali have been flooded for the second consecutive day due to abnormal tides. This has damaged about three kilometers of embankments in Hatiya, the island upazila of the district. At the same time, waterlogging has also increased in the mainland of the district due to fresh rainfall.

On Saturday afternoon, when I went to the Chairmanghat area of Harani Union in Hatiya, it was seen that Chatlarghat and the surrounding areas of Harani Union have been submerged in the Meghna waves. Seven-eight shops have been destroyed by the tide. The fishing pier in Chairmanghat is also on the verge of disappearing into the river.
Local resident Abul Kalam said that a part of the fishing pier was destroyed by the storm and tide on May 29. This time, more than half of it has been destroyed by the tide for two consecutive days. It has now become difficult to sustain business during the Hilsa season.
Md., a resident of Sukhchar area of Hatiya, Shamimuzzaman told Prothom Alo that Sukhchar, Char Amanullah and surrounding areas have been submerged in tidal water. Thousands of people are in extreme distress.
Hatia Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) Md. Alauddin said that several low-lying areas of the upazila, including Nijhum Dwip, have been flooded. However, no major damage has been reported so far. Erosion has occurred at various places on the embankment in Tupania, Al-Amin village and Nalchira.
Executive Engineer of the Water Development Board (PAUBO) Noakhali office Md. Halim Salehi said that due to the new moon and low pressure, about three kilometers of embankment in Tupania, Al-Amin village and Nalchira areas have been damaged by high tide.
Waterlogging in the district town and Sadar
Due to the rainfall in the last two days, waterlogging has again occurred in various low-lying areas of Sadar, Begumganj, Senbagh and Kabirhat upazilas, including the district town Maijdi. This afternoon, water was seen accumulating in the roads adjacent to the Maijdi judge’s court, the court premises, the Red Crescent office and the surrounding areas.
Many rural roads and homes in Eklashpur, Chaumuhani Municipality, Hajipur, Rasulpur and Kadirpur areas of Begumganj upazila are flooded. Motasim Billah, a resident of Hajipur area of Chaumuhani Municipality, said that the water is receding slowly. Many people in ward number 8 are still waterlogged. Movement has become difficult due to the submerged roads.
District Relief and Rehabilitation Officer Md. Masudur Rahman said that there is still waterlogging in some areas in the low-lying areas. Work is underway to drain the water.
Officer-in-charge of the District Meteorological Observatory Md. Rafiqul Islam said that 42 millimeters of rainfall was recorded in Maijdi from 9 am on Friday to 9 am on Saturday. He said that due to the new moon and the influence of low pressure, stormy winds and rainfall may continue.
